YOUR HEALTH DEPENDS ON YOUTM

Life is a quest for love. In order to receive love, we must be dependent. In order to give love, we must be independent. The conflict between dependence and independence affects every facet of our lives.

Life and love begin with our parents. As helpless babies, we depend on their care. With the right kind of care, we learn to love them and ourselves. With the right kind of parenting, we learn dependence and independence.

Of course, there is no perfect parenting. So we all have trouble with dependence and independence. Sometimes we are dependent when we should be independent, and vice versa.

Health-care is reminiscent of childhood. The doctor is our parent, and we are helpless babies. We feel secure in his office, and long for his concern, reassurance, and medicine. We are awed by his jargon, worship his intellect, and feel totally dependent.

Of course, health-care is not childhood. The doctor is not our parent, and we are not helpless babies - no matter how much we wish this were true. Sometimes, the doctor's words, procedures, and medicine do not solve our health problems.

Often, our health problems are the result of dehydration, malnutrition, and addiction. These problems are self-inflicted and require changes in our attitude and lifestyle. It takes independence and courage to make these changes. The goal of organicMD.org is to assist you in this process.

YOUR HEALTH DEPENDS ON YOU is divided into three sections: 1) Home, 2) Hygiene, and 3) Personal.

HOME
orange bullet Your home is an extension of your body. Keep it safe, clean, and organized.
orange bullet Avoid falls, cuts, burns...
orange bullet Use fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors. Keep fire extinguishers ready.
orange bullet Avoid toxic chemicals: pesticides, herbicides...
orange bullet Avoid microwave ovens.
orange bullet Remove allergens: pets (especially cats), dust, smoke, carpeting...
orange bullet Clean your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom frequently.
orange bullet Humidify in the winter; de-humidify in the summer.
orange bullet Avoid aerosols, hairspray, hair dyes, cosmetics, anti-perspirants, perfume, incense, tattoos, body-piercing...
orange bullet Avoid fluorescent lighting.
orange bullet Minimize exposure to TV and CRT screens.
orange bullet Open your windows frequently to allow for cross-ventilation.

HYGIENE
orange bullet Always wash your hands before handling food and before eating.
orange bullet Use vegetable-based soap (coconut, palm, olive).
orange bullet Clean fruits and vegetables well before peeling or eating.
orange bullet Store cooked food in airtight containers.
orange bullet Pay attention to food safety, and avoid food poisoning. Remember that food can be contaminated with toxic chemicals, insects, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and dirt.
orange bullet Use an oral irrigator after every meal. Oral irrigation is more effective and gentler than flossing. Occasionally, oral irrigation fails to dislodge food stuck between teeth, and gentle flossing is required.
orange bullet Brush your teeth at bedtime with an electric toothbrush. There are two kinds of electric toothbrushes: oscillating and sonic. I prefer oscillating electric toothbrushes, because they are safer and gentler. Use a non-fluoride natural toothpaste.
orange bullet Speak to your dentist about using composite fillings and porcelain crowns and bridges.
orange bullet See a periodontist for scaling and root-planing, but try to avoid periodontal surgery.
orange bullet Ask your physician or nurse practitioner to irrigate your ears every two to three years.
orange bullet Rinse your nose with lukewarm slightly salty water every day.
orange bullet Turn your socks inside out before washing.
orange bullet Avoid the routine use of anti-bacterial products: anti-bacterial soap, anti-perspirants, mouthwash...
orange bullet Shower twice a day, and take a warm bath once a week.

PERSONAL
orange bullet Wear comfortable clothes and sandals. Organic clothing is ideal.
orange bullet Use a high-quality foam mattress and pillow.
orange bullet Protect yourself from excess sun exposure. Wear sunglasses and a hat outdoors.
orange bullet Stretch gently, breathe deeply, take leisurely walks and short naps.
orange bullet Find an aerobic activity you enjoy and can do regularly without pain. (Consult your physician, especially if you have chronic health problems.)
orange bullet Ask your physician about using an infrared heat lamp and electric massager for musculoskeletal pain.
orange bullet Express your thoughts and feelings in writing.
orange bullet Rethink your habits and beliefs. Don't be afraid to make changes in your life.
orange bullet Study vocabulary, geography, and different cultures. Learn to appreciate diversity.
orange bullet Develop new interests, meet new people, make new friends.
orange bullet Cultivate an open mind and an open heart. Avoid prejudice, elitism, cults, and gurus.
orange bullet Search for spirituality. Practice prayer, kindness, humility, gratitude, charity, forgiveness, and honesty.
orange bullet Learn to accept silence and solitude.
orange bullet Find a balance between pessimism and optimism, cynicism and trust, caution and courage, realism and idealism.
orange bullet Avoid self-destructive behavior, such as dangerous sports and gambling.
orange bullet Avoid unnecessary competition, criticism, guilt, and debt.
orange bullet Think, plan, and slow down.
